How hard is it to register a JDM vehicle (or any other 25-year import) in the USA? If you live in Ohio, the answer is: surprisingly simple.
While some states make you jump through hoops, Ohio treats your imported car much like any other out-of-state vehicle—provided you have your paperwork in order. Here is the 4-step approach to getting your plates.
1. The BMV: VIN Inspection (The $5 Handshake)
Before you can get an Ohio title, the state needs to verify that the vehicle physically exists and matches its paperwork.
- The Process: Drive (or trailer) your vehicle to any local Deputy Registrar (BMV)
- The Task: They aren’t checking your blinkers or your brakes; they are simply verifying the VIN (Chassis Number). Since JDM cars don’t have standard 17-digit US VINs, they will record the shorter Japanese chassis number.
2. The Title Office: Meeting the Tax Man
Take your VIN inspection certificate to the County Clerk of Courts Title Office. This is where the magic happens. To leave with an Ohio title, you’ll need your existing vehicle title or import folder ready:
- The Goods: For out of state vehicles: You’ll need your existing vehicle Title, you may also have to show a Bill of Sale if the title does not show the sale price of the vehicle.
For self imported vehicles: You’ll need your Japanese Export Certificate (and a certified English translation), your Bill of Sale, and your federal entry forms (CBP 7501, EPA 3520-1, and DOT HS-7). - The Payment: You’ll pay the Ohio sales tax based on your purchase price and a small title fee (usually around $15).
3. Back to the BMV: The Home Stretch
Now that you have a shiny new Ohio title in your name, head back to the Deputy Registrar.
- The Goal: Show that new title for a set of plates and a registration sticker.
4. Drive Off: Happy & Legal
That’s it. No special Import tax, no hidden Grey Market fees.
Pro Tip: The Short VIN Glitch
Occasionally, a newer clerk might be confused by a JDM chassis number because it isn’t 17 digits long. Don’t sweat it. Politely remind them that it’s a 25 year import exemption and their system has a specific way to override the character count.
