Winterizing your Vehicle – Rust Prevention

If you live in a climate with regular snow flurries, you need to make a choice. Are you going to baby your car and commute in a beater during the winter, or enjoy the drive year round and provide some peace of mind without worrying about rust.

There are many ways to help beat the road salt and brine we see here in the salt belt of the USA. The easiest solution – if you ran out of time before winter hit, is to have regular car washes. It’s important, even on those freezing days, to help get rid of the salt buildup. The best option when going this route is to use a car wash monthly subscription. You can wash your car as often as needed, all for one low price. Check local car washes for your best deals, and simply cancel the plan in the spring once the snow is gone.

Our preferred option is to use a rust preventative – Fluid Film – applied to the undercarriage of the car, in combination with regular upper body washes to remove grime but keep the rust protection intact. If you apply your rust prevention in the fall before winter hits, it can keep your car looking new for years to come, without the worry of a rotted out frame.

There are many articles and videos online that review the topic of rust prevention, and everyone does have their favorite brand they use. The most important thing isn’t the brand you use, it’s simply the act of using a rust inhibitor to protect your vehicle. People have great results with Fluid Film, Woolwax, NHOU, POR-15, Surface Shield and others. If you apply one brand this year and are not happy with performance, you can easily switch to something different the next.
