Maybe you saw one of those JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) mini truck (kei truck) posts on facebook and it was too cheap to be true. Should you really buy one vs. a golf cart? We think thats an easy YES, but if you are wondering about some of the pros and cons, we have a list to consider while evaluating for yourself.
JDM Vehicle Ownership Pros:
- You can usually find the model you want with low mileage, and it won’t break the bank
- Vehicles tend to have little or no rust (have the vehicle inspected to be sure)
- Interiors are typically in good to great condition
- In Japan, inspections must be performed every 1-3 years depending on the type of vehicle; any failing items must be addressed or the vehicle is not allowed to operate on the roads
- Hybrid vehicle alternative, you can find some very fuel efficient models to help you avoid paying Hybrid vehicle fees
- Many states in the US allow you to register them as Historical vehicles, meaning you pay a one time registration fee for life, or a majorly reduced fee
- It is easy to score luxury features on many models if you know where to look – find some recommended dealers here
- They are a blast to drive
JDM Vehicle Ownership Cons:
- Most mainstream mechanics will NOT work on a JDM vehicle
- JDM imports will be 25years old at a minimum, due to US laws, be aware that the JDM ride with shiny new looking paint is older than most cars you see on the road
- Ensure basic maintenance is performed before you drive it home, fresh imports will potentially have old tires, fluids, etc.
- If you have a model that is unique and low volume, it may be hard to find parts
- Buyer beware, Kei cars and trucks are small and slower (limited in size and power)
- Even for common models, it can take a while for parts to arrive in that time of need – find parts suppliers before you purchase your ride
- The internet has answers for normal cars, not always your JDM import… so be prepared to do get your hands dirty, or find a local mechanic willing to work on your new purchase
JDM vehicles are very fun to drive & ride around in. Some are slower than a 1st Gen Scion Xb, while others have plenty of power to haul up interstate inclines without any issue. Before you spend your hard earned cash on one ensure you get something with the features you want/need, and parts are readily available.
